Sixth Form Students win United Nations Association (UNA-UK) Essay Competition

Brockenhurst College joined forces with the United Nations Association (UK) Lymington Branch to reach out and raise awareness of the United Nations (UN) to the students. The competition was designed to encourage students to research and understand the role of the UN and its global support for human rights, conflict resolution, social development and environmental issues such as climate change.

Jean Vernon-Jackson MBE DL, Chair of UN Lymington Branch said, “This is a wonderful example of how we can engage the hearts and minds of the younger generation to learn through their studies how we support global issues. The winning students showed that they understood why the UN evolved and why today we continue with our work. Many congratulations to Andrew Sime and Jake Durham for their outstanding achievement!”

The winning students took part in a special presentation where they were awarded their prizes, of £100 and £50 respectively, by Jean Vernon-Jackson MBE DL and Dr. Angeline Hampton, UN Lymington Branch, who had created the initiative.

Andrew Sime, Sixth Form student at Brockenhurst said, “I wanted to test my writing skills as I do not do a lot of long essay writing on my courses. I spent a good deal of time researching on the internet and the essay came together quite easily from there. I found out a lot about the UN and was quietly confident with my essay, but it was a nice surprise to win.”

The second winner, Jake Durham added, " My history teacher suggested entering the competition as it tied in with what I was doing in class. I looked at the evolution of the UN right up to the present day and although I knew a bit about the organisation, it was a really good exercise to learn more about what they do. I am really pleased to have won and the winning funds will support my student trip to China which I believe the project has local involvement with the UN."

Di Roberts, Principal Brockenhurst College said, “Brockenhurst College is proud to have supported such an activity to raise the awareness of UN Association’s Lymington branch to our students. This is a great example where a local charity organisation and our students have come together for the benefit of all. Many congratulations to Andrew and Jake in winning this competition and our thanks to Jean Vernon-Jackson MBE DL and her team for providing us with this opportunity to engage and learn about their great work.”

College celebrates International Baccalaureate success

Following Brockenhurst College’s recent Presentation Evening, several International Baccalaureate (IB) students were celebrating exam success as they collected their awards after achieving record results. IB graduates Poppy Sharp, Jess Worsdale, Beth Kirkland, Milly Smart, Susannah Knights, Jade Turner and James Randle, who all gained exceptional scores of 40 points or more, were highlighted in the Principal’s talk for their fantastic achievements.

As one of the best International Baccalaureate schools in the country, Brockenhurst College’s IB pass rates have been excellent. Scoring consistently over 90% the College’s results far exceed the world-wide pass rate of 82%. Most students achieved 30 points or more, which is the equivalent of 3 ½ A levels at A grade.

IB students enjoy the variety of subjects and small class sizes form close-knit support groups. Student Poppy Sharp, from Arnewood, who scored 42 points, said, “My results exceeded my expectations so I’m very happy, particularly as I got into Oxford! The lecturers were very supportive – they encouraged me to apply to Oxford University, helped with my personal statement and as a group we received extra revision sessions in the run up to exams. There is a really good team spirit on the IB as we are all aiming high so we help each other out. I’ve really enjoyed my subjects on the course and am now excited about my next challenge doing Experimental Psychology at Oxford.”

Patricia Harriss, Head of the International Baccalaureate Department at Brockenhurst said, “These programmes are challenging and universities recognise the breadth and depth of the work undertaken by the students. With the majority of IB students aiming for higher education, most are able to join their first choice university and last year three students secured places at Oxford or Cambridge.”

Brockenhurst College’s Open Evening on 11th February, from 5:30-7:30 pm, offers an excellent opportunity to find out if the IB is a good option for you. Come along to one of the talks and chat to lecturers and students to see whether you could be the next success story.
