Course Details

Further Mathematics:  This is a good option for mathematically able students offering 2 A levels in Maths.  It can provide a strong basis for applying to the top universities and gives a sound foundation for students wanting to go on to university to study Mathematics or for any subject which uses Maths including Physics, Engineering, Economics and Computing. Students studying this course must show a high level of commitment towards Mathematics.

On this course you learn both Pure Maths (which includes algebra, calculus, trigonometry and geometry) and Applied Maths. Pure Maths (the “Core” modules) gives you the tools needed for solving problems, while the Applied Maths allows you to use these in real world contexts.  What you learn in Maths can be used in many other subjects. Statistics units are a useful support in Biology, Social Sciences or Business and Finance, whilst Mechanics units are a very useful support in Physics or for continuing on to Engineering degrees.

Course Structure & Teaching Methods

In addition to topics being explained and examples worked through, you will be expected to participate fully in class by contributing ideas, working in small groups on worksheets or working through questions.  There will be a variety of learning styles including use of graphic calculators and computer software.  You will be expected to do a significant amount of work outside class including being set regular homework.  Personalised Learning sessions, in the form of workshops, are available to support your studies.

AS level Mathematics comprises of 3 modules, which will be examined during your first year.

A level Mathematics comprises of 6 modules taken by the end of your first year.

The Further Mathematics qualification has a similar structure and is taken during the second year of the course.

All modules contain a written exam.  In addition, some modules contain a piece of assessed coursework.

Information & Support

Students are required to pay for textbooks for each module studied and resources which include revision material and past papers.  The total cost for the two years is about £180. In addition you will also be encouraged to purchase a graphic calculator (£52) from the Maths Department.

Progression Opportunities

By the end of the first year you will have completed an A-level in Maths.  You can then decide whether to continue on to an AS or the full A-level in Further Maths.
