You will learn to use tides, plot positions and make safe short inter-port trips. For years he has delighted students with his anecdotes and sense of humour and his knowledge is passed on in his easy manner, making learning great fun.

Information & Support

For those with little or no knowledge of boats or their operation. A course to turn complete novices into safe proficient skippers of sail or power boats. This theoretical course, which is part of RYA National Cruising Scheme, is held during off season times to qualify you for voyaging. A Day Skipper practical course could follow under seagoing conditions, allowing you to apply for an International Certificate of Competency (I.C.C.) N.B. Competent crew is not as advanced as Day Skipper.

This, if you wish, could then prove an excellent introduction to a Yachtmaster Course, progressing to Ocean Going Yachtmaster if required, making the world your oyster! You will be required to devote 3-4 hours a week at home for private study as homework is usually set every week. Regular assessments enable you and your tutor to monitor your progress. An invigilated test at the end of the course leads to the official RYA Day Skipper Certificate of Competency being awarded.

You will need to bring the following items to the course:
Writing Materials (for the first class)
Dividers
Plotter (or parallel rules)
2B Pencil
Eraser

Other information books (such as Rules of the Road for Yachts) could assist but most equipment purchased will be of future use. (Available from most yacht chandlers or by mail order).

Practical help and advice is also provided to assist students with any kind of disability or individual need, including people for whom English is not their first language. Please contact our centre staff to discuss your needs prior to starting your course.
