Intermediate Vocational

The Intermediate Vocational Pathway allows you to focus on the career area of your choice and develop the knowledge and skills that employers will be looking for. You will have the chance to choose a course that fits in with the strengths you have developed at school and with your future plans. Courses usually last for one year and you will need a number of GCSE passes at grade D or above to qualify.

The pathway includes a wide range of vocational courses in the following areas:

  • Art & Design*
  • Business Administration
  • Business*
  • Childcare and Education
  • Construction
  • Engineering*
  • Professional Chefs’ Diploma
  • Health and Social Care*
  • Hospitality
  • IT*
  • Performing Arts*
  • Public Services*
  • Sport*
  • Sport, Recreation and Activity Leadership
  • Travel & Tourism*

Students choose one of these courses and add GCSE re-takes, usually in the core subjects of Maths, English or Science.

Most courses are BTEC First Diploma courses (marked* in the list above). These courses are made up of six units and are assessed entirely through coursework. This means that you will have an idea of how well you are doing as you go through the course and get some opportunity to re-submit work that does not reach pass standard.

Your BTEC will involve 12 sessions a week, leaving you time to add courses in English, Maths or Science to widen your options at the end of the year. If you have already achieved C grades in these core GCSEs a number of other GCSE subjects are available to complete your programme.

We offer vocational training courses to develop skills for particular jobs in areas such as Business Administration and Hospitality. These courses take place in real working environments in the College. If you opt for one of these courses you will be completing an NVQ award, a qualification widely accepted by employers. NVQ courses involve a lot of practical assessment.

Where Next?

Success on these courses will give you 3 options: A further course at College, Employment, NVQ training and/or an Apprenticeship.

My course has definitely lived up to and exceeded my expectations and I have enjoyed every minute of study here. My classmates and lecturers are all really nice and encourage you to work hard and achieve your goals, while at the same time allowing you the freedom to relax once in a while.

"I did a foundation level 1 in Construction and Industry at Brock 1 day a week whilst at school. I enjoyed this so decided to continue with the Intermediate Construction Award in Carpentry after school. I decided to come to Brockenhurst because it is local and a good College. The best thing about the course are the teachers and the people on my course."
