6SACMP AS/A level Computing
Computing is the A level course for you if you are interested in learning how to program computers and gaining a deeper understanding of the technical aspects of computer systems. Programming is fundamental to A level Computing; programs can be as simple as adding two numbers or as complex as Operating Systems (Windows Vista has 50 million lines of program code). The main programming language you will learn is Visual Basic together with ASP. In conjunction with the practical software development you will also learn about the internal components of computers; the internet and networking; problem solving; data representation and databases. There are 4 assessed units, two in each year of the course: Unit 1 an on-screen practical exam; Unit 2 written paper; Unit 3 written paper and Unit 4 practical project. Computing can be taken with any A level programme and complements many subjects, particularly mathematics, science, electronics and graphics based courses.

6SADTR AS/A level D&T Product Design (Resistant Materials)
This is a design course aimed particularly at students interested in manufactured products. It leads on from GCSE Design and Technology Resistant Materials and involves a high degree of workshop based design work. You will be required to identify problems, research them and develop ideas and final solutions. Careful analysis and planning is important and a drawing/sketching ability is essential. Assessment is by coursework and examination covering resistant materials technology, product study, components and systems. Students with an ambition to work in the areas of mechanical engineering, engineering design, production, or craft based industry will find this course of great interest.

6SAIT AS/A level Information & Communication Technology
ICT skills are highly valued in all areas of industry and commerce. The course examines how ICT is used practically in business today and how ICT impacts on almost every area of our daily lives. Combining theory with practice, the course ranges from the basics of hardware and software through to how to run ICT projects and also considers the social, ethical and economic impact of ICT on society. You will have the opportunity to develop in-depth skills in application software including spreadsheet, database and web design tools. The final project in the second year of the course gives students the opportunity to work with a small business to design, build and implement a real ICT system for use within the business. Highly relevant for a broad range of university courses and careers, this course combines well with a wide variety of other subjects including business studies, economics, accounting, any of the sciences, mathematics, or creative subjects such as media studies or photography.

This course provides a broad based introduction to Engineering. It is ideal if you do not know which one of the many branches of Engineering is most suitable for your career. 6C2DIT EDEXCEL Level 2 BTEC Diploma – IT
This course is the equivalent of 4 GCSEs, and offers a broad introduction to computer systems, providing the skills and experience necessary to enable students to progress to advanced level courses or apply for an apprenticeship in an ICT related job. The course is very practical and is continually assessed through assignments. You will develop knowledge of both hardware and software including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, desktop publishing and graphics. You will also develop an understanding as to how computer systems are used practically in business to assist with and solve business problems.

6C3EDIT EDEXCEL Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma – IT
This is a full time course equivalent to three A levels. There is opportunity to combine this course with study in another subject if the student wishes. If you enjoy computer-based work, are good at problem solving, like practical work and 'getting your hands dirty' then this could be the course for you. The course involves study across a total of 18 units. As you would expect from a course such as this there is a wide range of topics to study and you will develop skills in hardware installation, application software such as spreadsheets and databases, software troubleshooting, programming, networking, web design and graphics, IT in business and e-commerce. The course is based on continuous assessment and there are no exams. The course also includes the opportunity to gain externally recognised qualifications in networking and in the second year of the course there is an opportunity to undertake a work placement in preparation for either a career in the IT industry or progression to university.
