6SACMC         AS/A level Communication and Culture

If you enjoyed learning about language, media, history and culture at GCSE level, then the new specification in Communication and Culture will inspire you.  A dynamic area of study with a strong contemporary orientation, this brand new specification offers you the opportunity to investigate the interaction between the individual and the broader cultural environment.  Key concepts from identity to power are explored.  At AS level, you will examine different concepts of culture and communication (such as clothing, hairstyles, body adornment and language) and apply your findings in independent coursework on 'culture and the individual' and 'cultural contexts and practices'.  At A2 level, you will research dominant and alternative approaches to the understanding of communication and culture, exploring 'cultural sites', including spaces and places (such as buildings and natural environments), fictions/narratives (such as film and television) and objects of desire (such as lifestyle and identity).  In addition, you will undertake a major piece of independent coursework on, either, personal and social identities or social and cultural rituals.

6SAELG         AS/A level English – Language

If you enjoyed learning about language, grammar and history at GCSE level, then the new English Language specification will stretch and challenge you by providing opportunities to study how language is used in written, spoken and electronic forms.  You will also study the language development of children and how this is linked with their understanding and expression.  Coursework at AS level will help you to develop your ability to write for specific audiences and purposes, linking the way that indivduals, social groups and organisations are represented by language.  At A2 level, you will explore how the English language has changed since 1600 and how it continues to change.  You will investigate how English varies globally, regionally and socially.  You will also examine cultural debates about the significance of language and undertake a major piece of independent coursework on an agreed topic.

A level English Literature provides you with an introduction to the discipline of advanced literary studies.  6SAELL       AS/A level English – Language & Literature

If you enjoyed learning about language, grammar, history, literary analysis and writing techniques at GCSE level, then the new A Level specification in English Language and Literature will inspire you to learn about spoken and written language from real and imagined worlds.

At AS level, you will explore spoken and written language in literary, non-literary and multimodal texts of the 20th and 21st centuries (including, non-fiction writing, prose, scripted dialogue, transcripts of conversation, radio broadcasts, TV chat shows, pod casts and email) in order to learn about how spoken voices are used and how written voices are created.  In addition, you will learn to respond analytically to literary novels and/or drama texts.  At A2 level, you will apply your skills and knowledge of literary and linguistic concepts and approaches gained in AS units, and from your wider reading, to explore and evaluate the different ways writers deal with similar themes and issues and make creative connections between texts and contexts.

At A2, you will undertake a major piece of independent coursework producing a comparative analysis of two different writers, poets and/or playwrights chosen from an approved list.  You will be encouraged to develop your own question and area of close detailed study.

Your speaking, listening, reading and writing will develop to a high level in this most popular foreign language.  French is used, as far as possible, in class and there are compulsory weekly conversation sessions with a native French speaker.  Modern France and connected topics form part of the course, and a work placement in France is offered each year.  Assessment is by listening, reading, writing and oral examination for AS, listening, reading, writing and oral examination for A2.

6SAGER         AS/A level German

Germany has a vital role in Europe and the World.  This course builds your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to a high level along with study of modern Germany and connected topics.  German is used whenever possible in class, and you may be able to have regular conversational practice with a native German speaker.  An exchange visit is also possible.  Assessment is by listening, reading, writing and oral examination for AS, listening, reading, writing and oral examination for A2.

6SASP        AS/A level Spanish

This course will enable you to increase your knowledge of Spanish by reading about and discussing many aspects of contemporary society. You are taught in a variety of ways (group work, individual research, using IT, in the Language Lab and you are always encouraged to develop your understanding of Europe and Spain, using up to date materials. The AS and A2 include research into your chosen topic. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are all assessed across both years. A visit to Spain is offered to all students.

6SOCBCHE        Entry level Certificate in Business Chinese

For beginner learners interested in picking up practical, conversational skills that can be used in a commercial environment.  In a short period of time, learners will be able to develop a bacis proficiency in the language, as the course introduces only relevant vocabulary and sentence structures.  Listening and speaking skills are emphasised rather than reading and writing skills.  Learners will have maximum support - a multimedia and omline version of the course is available to learners at all times.

6SGCH       GCSE Chinese (Mandarin)

Chinese is spoken by nearly one third of the world's population.  You will become familiar with the fascinating culture and language of this historic, diverse country.  The course is available to students who have not studied another language to GCSE though successful previous study of another language would be an advantage.  This is normally a 2 year course though students with previous study of Chinese could complete the course in 1 year.  You will develop your writing, speaking, reading and listening skills by studying a wide range of topics.

6SGE         GCSE English

We offer students several routes to improving their skills in English.  GCSE English has a 40% coursework element and is designed to improve your writing and speaking for that element.  We concentrate on the reading and writing skills for the 60% examination element too.  Where GCSE is not an appropriate route, we offer Functional Skills to build basic skills more effectively towards a GCSE pass grade.
