Course introduction

The Access to Higher Education course provides an alternative route to university for adults without the formal qualifications or traditional academic background required for entry to a degree level qualification.

Your chosen course will provide full university entrance requirements for degree level education.

Course structure

The diploma consists of 60 credits all at level 3;  57 credits are of academic content and three credits of study skills.

The academic credits are from four subjects within each diploma. The teaching methods include a wide variety of lectures, practical work and research.

  • Humanities
  • Humanities with Mathematics
  • Law
  • Nursing & Midwifery
  • Primary Teaching
  • Science
  • Social Sciences

Minimum entry requirements

Most universities require Maths and English GCSE at C or above. Primary Education also requires General Science GCSE grade C.

It is advisable to achieve these requirements before starting an Access course. 

GCSE Maths at C or above is required for Maths and Physics. 

Access to Higher Education is aimed solely at those wanting to go onto university and is accepted by universities for their courses.

How will I be assessed?

The diploma is evaluated through continuous assessment at the end of each unit.

The assessment will include some exams and some research amongst other things.

Experienced and competent staff at our adult learning centres can help you decide on your course and progression options.

Practical help and advice is also provided to assist students with any kind of disability or individual need, including a lack of GCSE English or Maths or for people for whom English is not their first language.
