Course Details

Learn the rudiments of acoustic guitar playing in a friendly environment.

Suitable for those who have not played guitar or who are in the very early stages of their learning, or anyone wishing to refresh their skills. Please note this is not a classical guitar course although it may include the study of some elementary classical guitar techniques.

Teaching will take a hands-on approach and will be centred on songs covering popular musical genres. There will be audio and visual demonstrations by the tutor and practical application by students. Learning will be aided by hand-outs provided by the tutor, and computerised and handwritten whiteboard diagrams.

Students will need to bring the following to lessons:
Acoustic Guitar(steel strung or classical)
Medium Picks/Plectrums
Music Stand
Electronic Guitar Tuner
Notebook and Pencil/Pen

Handouts for chord shapes/chord progressions/scales and blank guitar windows/TAB will be provided.

Your Tutor: Simon Newton is an experienced Ringwood and Romsey based freelance guitar and vocal harmony teacher. He performs as guitarist and vocalist with acoustic jazz bands Retroswing and Swing 39. He was formerly a peripatetic guitar teacher for Hampshire and Southampton Music Services, and the University of Southampton. Simon studied jazz at Chichester College where he recorded a CD of jazz standards with singer Camilla Nowell and subsequently the album “Painting Tunes” with Brazilian singer Tereza Rachel. Simon enjoys arranging for solo guitar and vocal groups and composing classical music. He is a member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors, the Institute for Learning and the Southern Jazz Guitar Society, for whom he organizes and leads workshops and writes technical articles. He is currently working on a new musical project with Dorset–based vocalist and cabaret performer Bethany Jameson and accordion player Janet Beale.

Practical help and advice is also provided to assist students with any kind of disability or individual need, including people for whom English is not their first language.
