This course is designed for adults aged 19 plus who are looking to achieve a grade C level in GCSE Maths. It is diverse and engaging, equipping you with the right skills to reach your future destination. The course will run from September to the following June. Regular weekly attendance is required, as well as the completion of all homework assignments. This course will enable you to achieve a good grasp of basic mathematical concepts and techniques and will support work in a whole range of other courses. A GCSE grade C is a requirement for many careers in employment and for most Further/Higher Education courses.
Course Structure & Teaching Methods
A variety of techniques are used to support different learning styles. Teaching methods include tutor-led sessions, tutorials and discussions, plus individual, paired and group tasks. You will be expected to facilitate the knowledge gained in class by completing homework and self-study at home. The College also has its own dedicated e-learning site that students can access in and out of college.
The course comprises the following topics:
- Ratio, proportion and rates of change
- Geometry and measures
At the end of the year you will sit three assessments, each lasting 1.5 hours: Paper 1 non calculator (33.3%), paper 2 calculator paper (33.3%) and paper 3 calculator paper (33.3%). Each paper will consist of a mix of question styles, from short, single-mark questions to multi-step problems.
Information & Support
There are two adult courses available, either a Monday evening from 6pm to 8pm or a Tuesday afternoon from 12:30pm to 3:15pm (includes a break); both courses run on a weekly basis from Brockenhurst. Prior to starting on the course, you will be asked to attend an assessment session. This will indicate whether you are currently working at a level which is suitable for this course. If this is not the case, alternative course options, such as Functional Skills Maths, may be offered.
You will follow the new AQA GCSE Maths syllabus foundation tier, with your qualification graded 1 – 5 (5 being the highest).A grade 4 will be equivalent to the existing grade C GCSE.
The college has a dedicated Skills Development Team which is available to provide specialised support to students with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia or dyspraxia.
By the end of the course you will be confident in the use and applications of Maths. This qualification will create many opportunities for progression, both in terms of a variety of employment sectors and higher education, as well as providing important background to the study of many other subjects. Successful students can enrol onto GCSE Maths Higher Tier.
