Pilates – beginners

Pilates – beginners

Course Details

Pilates works on core strength while improving posture, body tone and alignment, strength and flexibility, co-ordination and breath control, while listening within to your own body needs. It is an exercise system that builds through levels and is used by physiotherapists to enhance healing to improve performance.

I will be offering a mat-based Pilates system which is taught primarily on the floor, however, it is vital that each member gets the best from the class and, so at times as we work with our individual bodies, it may mean for example that the use of a chair, yoga block, cushion or towel is of added value to a particular exercise.

Pilates is a non-competitive exercise system that develops personal health, wellbeing and body awareness which can be incorporated into your everyday life in the home, at work, when out and about or during times of relaxation.

Each class will commence with a short warm up, we will then build up a repertoire of pilates exercises and find the level that is most suited to your personal individual needs, finally finishing the class with relaxation.

Information & Support

Clothing should be comfortable and enable ease of movement while allowing the line of the body to be seen so that safe practice can be maintained.  Wear layers to allow for warmth and coolness.

Shoes are not worn so slipper socks are a good addition to the kit, especially in the winter.

You will also need a non-slip Pilates or Yoga mat.

A cushion and a towel for support and to act as a prop.

Please seek the advice of your medical physician if you are receiving, have had any recent treatments or are in doubt about any condition that you may have that could affect participation.

Additional courses and workshops will be offered throughout the year giving learners the opportunity to further develop their skills. Please see the current Leisure Courses brochure for details.
