This Apprenticeship is designed to help learners build the knowledge and skills needed when working under supervision with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas working in children’s settings including early years and social care.
To gain the CACHE Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workford learners must achieve a total of 35 credits: 29 credits from mandatory units plus 6 credits from Option units.
Mandatory units include:
- Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
- Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
- Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
- Child and young person development
- Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
- Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
- Support children and young people's positive behavior
- Contribute to the support of child and young person development
- Contribute to children and young people's health and safety
- Contribute to the support of positive environments for children and young people
- Understand partnership working in services for children and young people
Option Units are available at levels 2, 3 and 4 and include:
- Understanding children’s development
- Promoting children’s development
- Supporting play and creativity
- Supporting meal and snack time
- Supporting children with disabilities and special educational needs
Level 2 Award in Employment Responsibilities and PLTS Personal Learning and Thinking Skills are embedded in the childcare training and assessment.
Level 1 Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT. Tuition will be made available to support candidates to achieve these qualifications where they do not have accepted qualifications.
Candidates join workships to achieve the Childcare qualification. Arrangements are made for Functional Skills, English, Maths and ICT, where needed.
You will be taught using a variety of methods: lecture, whole class discussion, small groupwork, presentations, case studies and scenarios.
Minimum entry requirements
You should be at least 16 years old and have paid employment in an early years setting for at least 16 hours for 36 weeks. You need to show competence in both knowledge and skills in your work in the setting. Ideally an Apprentice would be employed for 30 hours a week. Where the contract is less, the Apprenticeship will take proportionally longer to achieve.
This qualification is suitable for a range of learners from the age of 16 upwards who have little or no experience of childcare.
If you have English and Maths at Grade D/Grade 3, you will not need to do Functional Skills English and Maths.
How will I be assessed?
All units are internally assessed using a range of methods: direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or tasks set by CACHE. Some learning outcomes require assessment in a real work environment.

This course requires an interview.
You will need the support from a qualified and experienced professional in your work setting who will be required to complete professional development records.
You will need to provide files and writing materials. Wordprocessing skills and access to a computer for research and writing is an advantage. You will be expected to make time for private study to complete the qualification which may take up to 18 months.
What can I do with this Apprenticeship?
On completion, learners may apply for job roles in the statutory, voluntary and private sectors, such as: Nursery Assistant, Classroom Assistant, Nanny or Pre-School Assistant.
Learners may progress to the CACHE level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) (QCF) or the Advanced Apprenticeship for the Children and Young People’s Workforce – Early Years Educator Pathway provided they have GCSE English and Maths Grade C.
