Course Details

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification that will give candidates a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. It includes the use of initial and diagnostic assessments and requires candidates to plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning, carry out assessments of and for learning and use resources effectively.

Course Structure & Teaching Methods

To achieve the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, candidates must achieve a minimum of 36 credits;

Unit 301  Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training   Credit Value 3
Unit 401  Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training   Credit Value 3
Unit 402  Delivering education and training   Credit Value 6
Unit 403  Assessing learners in education and training  Credit Value  6
Unit 404  Using resources for education and training   Credit Value 3
Unit 417  Inclusive practice   Credit Value 15

It covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers/trainers in the further education and training skills sector. Mandatory units look at roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training; planning to meet the needs of learners; delivering education and training, assessing learners and using resources. Option units include: Action research; delivering employability skills; identifying individual learning and development needs; managing learning and development in groups; preparing for the coaching role.

Teaching will include a variety of methods: short lectures, whole group discussion, small group work, practical tasks, case studies, demonstration, presentations. The delivery of teacher training at Brockenhurst aims to provide ideas for your own practice. 

 

Assessment

Formal assessment includes a teaching practice portfolio, unit assignments and 3 observed teaching sessions.

You will need to provide writing materials.

Students may work towards Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths during the programme.

Proof of identity, original certificates of qualifications and a DBS / CRB Enhanced Disclosure must be presented at interview for access to the course.

Progression Opportunities

On completion learners may progress to Learning and Development qualifications or Assessment and Quality Assurance qualifications. Those with 100 hours teaching may progress to a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. Those teaching Literacy, ESOL, Numeracy or Disabled learners may undertake a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (QCF) including specialist pathway provided they have 100 hours teaching of which 50 must be in the specialist area.
