Course introduction

This course will equip students for the modern world which requires all young people to be competent in the use of ICT. The course will consist of two lessons per week, with a controlled assessment at the end.
Functional Skills are practical skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that allow individuals to work confidently, effectively and independently in life providing learners with the skills and abilities they need to take an active and responsible role in their communities, everyday life, the workplace and educational settings.

Functional Skills ICT requires learners to use technology in ways that make them effective and involved as citizens, to operate confidently in life, and to work in a wide range of contexts.


Course structure

Content for both Level 1 and Level 2 will include:
Using ICT
Finding and Selecting Information
Developing, presenting and communicating information
Teaching methods include tutor-led sessions, tutorials and discussions, plus individual, paired and group tasks.   


Minimum entry requirements

These qualifications are for those students who have not achieved a Grade C in ICT at GCSE. 

How will I be assessed?

The assessment approach is primarily through a 2 hour external assessment taken at a computer within a controlled environment. This assessment will take place at a time/ date agreed with your tutor. 

Information & support

In class, students are supported by the course tutor and, where required, a learning assistant (LA).  The course e-learning site provides additional information and learning resources and is accessible both inside and outside the college.  In addition, the college’s Skills Development Team is available to provide specialist support to students with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia.

What can I do with this qualification?

Level 1 will allow progress to Level 2 Functional Skills.
Level 2 will allow progression to GSCE ICT.
