Course introduction

If you want to explore the processes that take place in living organisms and gain a recognised qualification, then GCSE Biology is the learning opportunity for you.

As a student you will develop your experimental strategies and skills, your abilities in evaluation and analysis, and your scientific thinking.

You will also become knowledgeable about quantities, units and symbols, and expand your scientific thinking.

This will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to achieve this qualification and apply what you have learned to new study and career-related endeavours.

This course will help you to build a detailed understanding of this branch of science by carrying out experiments, as well as reading, writing and discussing various topics.

You will learn under the guidance of expert teachers in high-tech and well-equipped science laboratories.

Teaching & learning

Through a combination of lectures, practical sessions, small group activities and e-learning resources, you will cover all the important ground.

Practical work is very important because competent experimentation is a key component as laid out by the exam board.

There will be two 90-minute taught sessions each week resulting in one GCSE science award.

You will study the following areas:

  • Cell biology
  • Organisation
  • Infection and response
  • Bioenergetics
  • Homeostasis and response
  • Inheritance, variation and evolution
  • Ecology
  • Key ideas

Minimum entry requirements

  •  GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above. 
  •  GCSE Science(s) at grade 3 or equivalent. 

How will I be assessed?

You will complete two equally-weighted examinations, each lasting one hour 45 minutes.

These exam papers will contain a combination of structured, closed short answer, open response and multiple-choice questions.

Information & support

  • You will need to purchase a copy of the course workbook and your stationery.
  • We will provide safety equipment, lab coats and practical materials.

What can I do with this qualification?

This qualification can enable you to study Biology or other related or unrelated subjects at A Level.

It will also give you essential knowledge in life sciences that you can then apply to related vocational courses.

In addition, this course will equip you with transferable skills related to data handling, analysis and evaluation.
