Course introduction

You can develop your scientific thinking along with skills in experimentation, analysis and evaluation by studying Chemistry at GCSE level.

It involves the study of matter, its properties, how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances, and how substances interact with energy.

You will also learn scientific vocabulary, as well as how to handle quantities, units, symbols and nomenclature.

All this will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to achieve this qualification and apply what you have learned to new study and career-related endeavours.

Teaching & learning

GCSE Chemistry will help you build a fundamental understanding of the subject through talking, reading and writing about science and carrying out experiments.

All lessons take place in laboratories, giving you plenty of opportunities for practical work, which is a strict exam board requirement.

Minimum entry requirements

  •  GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above. 
  •  GCSE Science(s) at grade 3 or equivalent. 

How will I be assessed?

There will be two exam papers that are weighted equally. Each exam lasts one hour and 45 minutes, contains 100 marks and represents 50% of your final grade.

Questions are a combination of multipl- choice questions, structured questions, closed short answer questions and open response questions.

  • We will provide safety equipment, lab coats and practical materials.

Course fees & Duration

The course fee (2017-18) is £300 for adult students. This includes exam entry and tuition.

What can I do with this qualification?

This course provides a single GCSE in science, which is an entry requirement for many courses at both college and University.

Careers include those in healthcare professions, teaching and laboratory technical support.
