This qualification aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to a range of counselling skills and an understanding of the importance of using counselling skills within published ethical frameworks, such as those from the National Counselling Society (NCS), British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the United Kingdom Counsel for Psychotherapy (UKCP). The option units will provide opportunity for the learner to acquire counselling skills in one of a choice of contexts. The range of counselling skills considered in this qualification is applicable to a wide area of helping and supporting roles.
Mandatory unit: Skills acquisition and practice: this unit will introduce the candidate to counselling, its ethos and methodology. It will support the development of fundamental counselling skills and provide candidates with skills, knowledge and understanding of practice within the boundaries of an ethical framework. Students will also consider strategies to ensure the safety of counsellor and client.
Option Unit: Working with Grief and Loss: This unit has been designed to introduce candidates to the different models of grief and loss, and to gain insight into key issues associated with working in this specialised area. It will encourage candidates to reflect on appropriate, safe and ethical practice when working in this context.
Course Structure & Teaching Methods
You will be taught through a range of methods including lecture, discussion, group work and role play. You will be expected to undertake additional private study.
Externally marked exam, internally marked role play and journal.
Information & Support
Students should bring an A4 file, paper and pen to each session. A slim ring-back file is needed for the Journal.
Students must expect to devote time each week to private study and homework.
