Course introduction

This programme is designed to prepare you for tackling the outbreak of infection in hospitals and healthcare settings. This is achieved by aiding you to understand the many causes of infection and how it can be spread, as well as how you can help control it.

Course structure

Unit 1: Principles of the causes and spread of infection in healthcare settings

You will learn about the chain of infection and examine how infection is caused and the ways it can spread.

Unit 2: Principles of the importance of personal hygiene and health in the prevention and control of infection in healthcare settings

You will discover the pivotal importance of personal hygiene, demonstrate effective hand-washing, and explore the principles of using personal protective equipment effectively.

Unit 3: Principles of decontamination, cleaning and waste management in healthcare settings

You will gain an understanding of how important cleaning, decontamination, sterilisation and waste management are in healthcare settings.

Unit 4: Principles of infection prevention and control in a healthcare setting

You will learn about the purpose of infection control and look in detail at regulations, policies, procedures, risk assessments, and roles and responsibilities.
