Course introduction

If you excel at playing a musical instrument or can sing or compose, then Music Performance is the perfect course for you. After all, you will get to study what you love.

Whether your main passion is performing, composing, or investigating the music industry, you will be able to develop skills and knowledge across the board.

You will also develop your music reading and performing skills to a high level, benefit from lessons and coaching sessions, and become involved in a wide range of performances.

In addition, you will have the chance to go on many different concert trips both here at home and abroad, and participate in professionally-led workshops.

At Brock we believe that musicians flourish among other musicians, and all our music teachers are active music practitioners at some level.

Our large Music department gives you the ideal environment to develop your musical skills by performing with others in groups and ensembles.

You will also benefit from our various music rooms and resources. These include Mac computers running Logic and Sibelius software, Bösendorfer, Bechstein and Yamaha pianos, recording studios, drum studios, and well-equipped teaching and practice rooms.

Teaching & learning

As well as group lessons and discussions, this programme involves developing your practical skills, exploring the music industry and focussing on preparing for a career in music.

You will also have opportunities for individual weekly tuition.

Importantly, you will learn about composition using a variety of methods, including the latest composition software.

Course structure

  • Work on your performance skills in order to become an even more confident and accomplished musician.
  • Undertake composing tasks to help you develop skills and knowledge that will help you realise your musical potential as a writer/arranger.
  • Learn to use industry standard software applications to write and arrange music.
  • Develop your skills of critical analysis by appraising different works in detail.
  • Expand your understanding of music theory.
  • Build on your understanding of the music industry

Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above to include:

  • English Language grade 5
  • Music (preferably grade 5)

Instrument or voice to the equivalent of grade 5 is essential, and some keyboard or piano skills are desirable.

Information & support

We will provide instrumental (or vocal) lessons at a subsidised rate for all students.

In addition, there is a £50 fee that pays for concert trips, equipment, scores and photocopying.

What can I do with this qualification?

In the past few years our students have gone on to study at a wide range of prestigious institutions.

These include: Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Trinity Laban School of Music, Royal Northern School of Music and Royal Welsh College of Music.

Past students have also found their way into universities like Cardiff and Southampton.
