You can gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours to be an able and effective retail team leader, guiding and coordinating staff, thanks to this apprenticeship.

It is all about helping customers buy products or services from retail organisations such as department stores, garden centres, high street chains, supermarkets and online and mail order businesses.

Teaching & learning

You will work to compile an e-portfolio, which will evidence your progress as a learner.

There will be a requirement for 20% off-the-job-training, which could see you undertake work-shadowing, make visits and conduct independent research.

You will also benefit from the continued support of your college assessor who will visit you in the workplace to ensure you are performing well and making adequate progress.

Training will take place at work on a regular basis, organised by you in conjunction with your employer to support what you do and to fill in any gaps.

Training structure

This course is focussed on you gaining the skills, knowledge and behaviours you need to succeed in the retail environment.

You will gather evidence to show competency across a range of areas and record your learning and progress in your job role.

You will study the following areas:

  • Customer focus
  • The Business
  • Financial operations
  • Marketing
  • Communication
  • Sales and promotions

Minimum entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grade 4 and above. 
  • Functional Skills Maths and English at Level 2 or above (unless GCSE grade 4 - 9 has been achieved). 
  • It is essential that you have previously completed a Level 2 retail qualification or have relevant experience as a team leader. 

How will I be assessed?

As well as continuous assessment by your college assessor, you will complete an End Point Assessment at the end of your apprenticeship period.

This should only commence once your employer and assessor are confident you have developed all the knowledge, skills and behaviours defined in the apprenticeship standard.

Before the assessment all English and maths components of the apprenticeship must be completed successfully.

Your End Point Assessment will consist of the following:

  • On-demand test
  • The retail business project
  • Professional discussion

What can I do with this Apprenticeship?

With this qualification you can progress onto our Level 4 Retail Manager programme.

This qualification can also be mapped into other qualifications such as Event Assistant qualifications.
