Course introduction

This programme is designed to equip drivers of wheelchair-accessible vehicles with the knowledge and skills to ensure safety in loading, unloading and transporting wheelchair-using passengers in a variety of vehicles.

It is open to all licensed and non-licensed vehicle drivers who have to load/unload wheelchairs. Importantly, the qualification recognised by both Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council.

Teaching & learning

This course involves a combination of a tutor-led workshop and a hands-on practical session in a variety of vehicles.

Course structure

  • Theory, including: duty of care, disability awareness, assistance dogs, practicable and sensitive assistance, risk assessment, what is acceptable in licensed vehicles, accessories and charging.
  • Types of wheelchairs, comprising the three classes and rules on what can and cannot be carried.
  • Practical vehicle restraint techniques for wheelchairs, which will be taught from a passenger’s point of view and incorporate practical guidance.
