As a Governor, you will play a key role in the future of our College. You will receive regular training and an induction programme arranged to support you in your role.
Di Roberts CBE – CEO/Principal/Governor
Di has been Principal and Chief Executive of Brockenhurst College since September 2006. Brockenhurst College, situated in the heart of the New Forest, is a Tertiary College, providing education and training to 3,000 full-time 16-18 year olds, c 900 apprentices and over 5,000 mainly part-time adults.
The College has a significant LLDD provision, providing discrete and supported mainstream education. The College attracts c.150 full-time international students from 25 countries each year and also delivers A-Level education in China. She has taught across the ability levels and has significant experience in education, training and business, including time as an Ofsted Inspector. She was Deputy Chair of the AoC from 2009 to 2015 and during this time chaired the AoC LLDD Portfolio Group, of which she remains an active member. In 2011, in recognition of her services to further education, Di was awarded a CBE.
A Member of the Board since 2000, Dave is Chair of the Corporation. He is also a Member of the Remuneration, Governance and Search, Employment and Personnel, Finance and Standards and Capital Project Committees. He became Chief Executive of the New Forest District Council in April 2000 and retired from this post in October 2015. Prior to joining the New Forest District Council he was the Borough Treasurer for Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council and has held other posts in local government. He has an MA (Oxon), and an MSc in Public Policy Making.
Graham was appointed to the Board in September 2014 and is a member of the Employment and Personnel, Finance and Standards and Capital Project Committees. He is the Director of Finance and Performance at Bournemouth University where he is responsible for the financial management and financial performance of the university, providing strategic and operational direction to ensure the effective utilisation of financial resources.
In addition, he has overall responsibility for procurement. Graham is a graduate of Manchester University; a Fellow Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and has a postgraduate qualification in education from Huddersfield University.
Jane was appointed to the Board in March 2010 and is a Member of the Employment and Personnel Committee and Remuneration Committee. Jane is Human Resources Manager (Policy and Strategy) at West Berkshire Council. She was previously HR Adviser, Education and Schools at Southampton City Council and has held various HR roles at Hampshire County Council and Surrey County Council.
Jane is also a chartered member of CIPD. She has a BSc degree in Psychology at the University of Bristol and a Diploma in Personnel Management at Portsmouth Polytechnic. Jane’s son and daughter were students at the College.
Zofia was appointed a co-opted Member of the Employment and Personnel Committee in July 2005 and full Governor Member in 2007. She has served as Chair and Vice Chair of the Employment and Personnel Committee and was appointed to the Board as a Local Community (Schools) Member in 2007 and is the Governors’ Representative for Safeguarding.
Zofia has a long career in teaching across many phases and sectors and is now retired. She works part time for Hampshire Registration Service as a Ceremonies Registration Officer, marrying people. Prior to this she was a Headteacher at a large junior school in Southampton and earlier at a village school in Wiltshire. She has an active interest in online learning and was an early champion for the then DfES, working nationally on a project which provided collaborative, web-based learning for junior aged children. She also has experience of running small businesses in retail and hospitality. As well as a BA Hons in Fine Art, Zofia has her FE Teacher’s Certificate, Postgraduate Certificate in Education and the National Professional Qualification for Headship. Both her daughters took A Levels at the College.
Stuart was appointed to the Board in July 2014 and is currently a member of the Audit and Remuneration Committees. He has held the position of Head of Global Sourcing for Hobbycraft Trading Ltd, Christchurch, since October 2010 and was previously Head of Buying and NHS Tenders for NHS Healthcare and Director of STTE Enterprise.
Stuart travels regularly to China where the College enjoys strong educational links. His two children were both recent students here and he looks forward to “giving back” to the College with the wealth of experience he brings to his role as Governor at the College.
Andrew was appointed a co-opted member of the Audit Committee in June 2011 and a Governor in June 2012.
He is a qualified accountant (ACCA) who is currently the Director of his own Finance firm. He also has previous experience working in Audit, Pensions, ICT and Retail across a breadth of positions for companies such as Ernst & Young, KPN, B&Q and Hobbycraft.
He is a former student of Brockenhurst College, who holds a BSc with Honours in Economics and Politics from the University of Bath.
Dr Celia Swan
Celia was co-opted onto the Finance and Standards Committee in December 2008 and appointed a full Member of the Board in December 2010. She is a member of the Governance and Search and Finance and Standards Committees.
Celia has spent her working life as a lecturer in the Statistics Department at the London School of Economics where she was also Dean of Undergraduates and, immediately before she retired, was responsible for the LSE student exchange programme. She also chaired a European interfaculty group in Marketing for several years and still chairs a statistic examination board for the University of London for their worldwide BSc’s in Economics and Management.
Her PhD is in Social Statistics and her consultancy and research work has included violence in the work place (where she worked for Dorset County Council) and air accident risks.
Professor Alex Neill
Alex was appointed to the Board in September 2014 and is a member of the Finance and Standards Committee and the Capital Project Committee.
Alex graduated from Cambridge University with a PhD in 1990. He was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Southampton in October 2012, and University Vice-President in 2016; in this role he leads the development and implementation of the University’s education strategy. He has previously held academic appointments at Universities in the UK and USA.
Alex is a Member of the Council of the Royal Institute of Philosophy and other memberships include British Philosophical Association, American Philosophical Association and American Society for Aesthetics.
Tim was appointed to the Board in July 2015 and is also a member of the Audit Committee. He has a BA Honours degree in Economics from the University of Manchester and is a trained Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
His professional life has been spent working in the European technology sector, employed by large US brand names and in-between by a pre-revenue start-up in a mix of operational, programme management and marketing roles.
Currently employed in a European service offerings and marketing leadership role at Xerox, where he is responsible for the co-development, deployment and marketing of software-enabled document services, Tim is particularly interested in how STEM-related education is evolving and ‘connects’ with available roles in the technology industry.
More generally, he is keen to contribute to and connect with the local community he has recently moved in to with his family, and to help further strengthen the college experience for the students it serves (which one day will include Tim’s son).
Christian was appointed to the Board in July 2013 and is a member of the Finance and Standards, Capital Project and Remuneration Committees.
He has been the Head of Human Resources at Appello since January 2014 after a series of promotions in the former Peverel Group since 2003. Previously, he held the post of Human Resources Coordinator at Denplan (Division of Axa Global) from August 2001 to August 2003.
Christian obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management in 2003 and an MA (Hons) in Human Resource Management in 2005. He has been a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) since 2002.
James was appointed as a member of the Board in July 2015 and is a member of the Employment and Personnel and Governance and Search Committees. He is also the Governor’s representative for the Student’s Union.
James is currently the Operations Director of Greenclose Hotels and is responsible for the day to day running of three hotels in the group who employ around 300 staff. Prior to this he was the general manager of Carey’s Manor and was responsible for the daily running of the hotel. James is committed to developing the skills, knowledge and understanding of all age ranges, but in particular nurturing young people.
Locally, he is known as a promoter of young talent, particularly from his own workforce. James’ son and daughter were both students at the College.
Davina was appointed as a co-opted Member of the Employment and Personnel Committee in June 2012 and appointed to the Board as a Governor in July 2015.
Whilst studying an Access Course from 2007-2008, she was an Adult Student Govenor. She then completed a degree in Applied Biology (Health) at Bournemouth University, graduating in 2013 and using her degree knowledge working for Hildon Ltd.
She also has a NEBOSH qualification in Health and Safety. Davina is now undertaking a PGCE through School Direct in collaboration with Southampton University, in order to teach Biology and Science at secondary school
Mark was elected as a Staff Governor in July 2009. He is a Member of the Audit Committee and the Governance and Search Committee. He is the Manager of the Hard Brock Café and has been at Brockenhurst College since May 1996.
Mark has a HND in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management and has experience in working in hotels, hospital catering, restaurant and retail management including work experience in Switzerland and Australia.
Since October 1991, he has been a Special Constable with Dorset Police where he has section leader responsibility for Christchurch and was Eastern Division Special of the Year in 2005. He recently received a Jubilee Medal for his 20 years’ service as a Special Constable.
Since 2014 he has been teaching ‘part-time’ in Uniformed Public Services and Travel and Tourism and has completed a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training.
