Ever wondered which politician is right, who created our problems, and which political party is best?

Many of these questions are explored in A Level Economics using economic theory to explain problems such as: unemployment, recessions, inflation, government debt, underfunding of public services and market volatility.

However, there are hardly ever any clear-cut answers. Indeed, in economics there are many different views of what is right, which is exactly why politicians always seem to disagree.

If you like grasping complex and interrelated financial concepts and then discussing how they may be managed, then Economics is definitely the subject for you.

Teaching & learning

You will develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories through critical analysis of current economic issues, problems and institutions.

You will also use micro and macroeconomic market models to explore current economic behaviour and make connections. 

In addition, you will develop a critical approach to analysing economic models and methods of enquiry, acknowledging important limitations.

Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above with a minimum average GCSE score of 4.0, including:

·       English Language grade 5

·       Maths grade 5

Please note, if you wish to study Economics at university you will need A Level Maths.

Course structure

• Study the UK and world economies and the issues affecting our daily lives.

• Learn about and discuss important economic principles to give you a solid grounding in the subject.

• Explore different types of economic behaviour in order to understand different factors and how they interrelate.

• Evaluate economic models and policies to help you grasp the significance of different economic theories and dynamics.

• Investigate why markets fail in the free market system and what governments can do to solve this.

• Discover economic problems such as inflation and unemployment along with the best policies that governments can adopt in these circumstances.

• Engage in economic debates and become well informed about what is happening in the news and how events and phenomena in economics affect people’s lives.

What can I do with this qualification?

Economics is an A Level that is well respected by top universities.

Our students have historically pursued university degrees in Economics and other business-related subjects, with many choosing career paths in finance.

However, the wide variety of skills developed through this course will also provide a solid foundation for a host of other degrees and careers.

In addition, Economics is a rigorous academic subject, which acts as a marker to help employers identify people for management roles.
