Electronics A Level

Electronics is at the heart of the technological revolution that has transformed all our lives. It is a vital part of a huge variety of applications, from medicine through to the entertainment industry.

By becoming qualified in Electronics you can discover new opportunities in areas such as computing networks and the internet, mobile communications, aerospace and avionics, medical electronics, robotics and industrial control. 

This course has a large practical element and you will have the opportunity to design and build your own electronic circuits as well as learn how to use test equipment.

As a student you will have access to your own set of equipment that includes: oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators, multi-meters and all the components required for practical work.

As a result, you will have everything you need to fulfil your potential in this challenging and rewarding field.

Teaching & learning

It is worth noting that our past Electronics students recorded some of the best success rates in the country. This is largely thanks to our winning formula for teaching and learning.

All theory teaching is done through worksheets, allowing you more time to get on with those all-important practical elements instead of writing. 

Then at the end of each topic we practise exam-style questions so you will be fully prepared for whatever the exam board puts in the exam paper.

Information & support

You will need to make a contribution to the cost of materials and components, which is currently around £40 a year. 

Please note: many students enjoy taking on more sophisticated projects. If this is you, then you will have to meet the cost of some additional components. 

You will also have to contribute towards the cost of any fieldtrips.

Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above to include:

• English Language 
• Maths grade 5
• Physics grade 5 or Science 5,5

In addition, you are strongly recommended to take Physics or Maths alongside this subject.

Course structure

• Learn the most important principles of electronics by working with both digital and analogue circuits.

• Work to understand logic systems, amplifiers and power supplies, as well as many other circuits and systems.

• Study radio and digital communications as well as learning about microcontrollers and how to program them.

• Explore various applications for electronics to give you real-world awareness of how to use your new knowledge.

• Build and test circuits in your first year before constructing and testing a large electronic system in your second year as part of your coursework.

• Acquire a firm basis for progression in electronics and engineering.

What can I do with this qualification?

Many students who successfully complete this course progress to university to study Engineering, Physics or Computing courses. 

Other students go on to take advanced apprenticeships with various companies or gain employment directly in the technology and engineering sector.

Importantly, all those who pass this course will have a range of practical skills and knowledge to benefit them throughout their lives.
