English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Course introduction
ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. The course is specifically designed for non-native English speakers who wish to start learning English or improve their skills, making it ideal for adults who have recently moved to the UK.
This general, non-exam programme will cover skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will learn vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and spelling in a variety of everyday contexts and in a supportive learning environment.
Alongside improving your English language skills, you will have the opportunity to achieve the Award in Living and Working in the UK. This qualification helps you develop a greater understanding of UK culture, customs, communities and everyday life, giving you the knowledge and confidence to play a full and active role in UK society.
Importantly, the ESOL course can be adapted to suit individual needs. In collaboration with your tutor, you will agree on specific weekly targets using an Individual Learning Plan. At the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to progress on to a Functional Skills English programme.
Among other things, you will:
- Learn how to have everyday conversations.
- Explore messages in posters, adverts, emails, articles and books.
- Understand how to give, take and understand instructions.
- Grasp the fundamentals of using written English, including grammar.
- Discover how to apply for jobs and succeed in job interviews.
