Teaching & learning


Our teachers use traditional learning methods, sourcing raw learning materials from official Cambridge and Oxford University Press textbooks.

Group discussions form an important part of the course. These lead to enhanced powers of expression and analysis, and also provide a valuable interactive facet to the overall learning experience.

As a student you will take advantage of technology, using resources ranging from PowerPoint presentations to podcasts. Furthermore, your teachers will encourage you to conduct your own research.

Minimum entry requirements


Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above with a minimum average GCSE score of 4.0, including:

  • English Language grade 5
  • English Literature grade 5
  • Maths

In addition, an interest in the analysis of grammar and language is desirable.

Course structure


  • Learn how language is used to create representations and meanings, giving you a greater awareness of the power associated with the written and spoken word.
  • Develop your understanding of language diversity, helping you appreciate the significance of different accents, dialects, genders and social groups.
  • Have the opportunity to conduct an investigation into language and produce original written work.
  • Explore how we first learned to speak as infants in order to acquire a deeper understanding of linguistic expression.
  • Debate whether or not men and women really use language differently whilst implementing actual research on the topic.
  • View how English has changed over the centuries, how it is still changing and what people think about these changes.

This course is a must for anyone considering a career in education or any branch of journalism or publishing.

It combines well with Psychology and/or Sociology, and is ideal preparation for a career in diverse fields including: business, advertising, marketing, public relations, human relations, law and politics.
