Geography A Level

If you enjoy finding out about how our world works and how we interact with our environment, then this is the course for you.

A Level Geography focuses on contemporary geography, looking at issues facing local and global communities both now and in the future.

Importantly, you will learn about physical and human processes operating in a variety of the world’s environments.

Other topics include glaciation, the earth’s life support systems, exploring our oceans, and contemporary issues of sovereignty and ownership.

To succeed you will need to be inquisitive, motivated, hardworking, and ready to get out of the classroom to discover what is happening in the field.

Teaching & learning

You will learn through a range of teaching styles.  Lessons will involve presentations, individual work, group discussion, notetaking, and map, photography and data interpretation.

Fieldwork is a key part of Geography. As part of your course you will complete four days in the field gaining valuable experience of collecting data.

Currently, we undertake local field trips to the New Forest and Bournemouth.

Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above with a minimum average GCSE score of 4.0, including:
•    English Language grade 5
•    Maths or Science grade 5

Course structure

• Study our oceans to obtain a clearer idea of how they have become contested areas.

• Look in detail at glaciated landscapes to unlock secrets of how and why these giant formations occur.

• Learn and develop a host of geographical skills that incorporate a range of analytical techniques, giving you important transferable skills.

• Explore connections between various global phenomena and understand how Earth supports life.

• Undertake a range of invigorating fieldwork in the local area.

• Investigate a geographical topic of your choice and produce a comprehensive piece of coursework.

What can I do with this qualification?

Geography is a subject that brings a wealth of transferable skills related to analysis, interpretation and data management. As such, it can be a key facilitating subject for a range of careers.

It also fits well with other science-related subjects and can form part of an established and respected route into higher education.

Past Geography students have discovered work opportunities in many different sectors, including: national park management, law, education, research, oceanography and administration.
