Course introduction

Are you practically minded?  Are you able to solve engineering problems?  Are you interested in technology? Have you wanted to travel? If the answer is yes, then a career in the marine industry could be ideal for you.

On our full-time Level 2 Marine Technologies course you will cover boat terminology, marine engineering, marine electrical topics and boatbuilding.

This knowledge will enable you to specialise in one or more marine careers, from marina operative to luxury superyacht builder/fitter. Alternatively, this programme could be your stepping-stone to the Royal Navy/Merchant Navy.

Importantly, you will have the opportunity to take part in employability training and work experience, and have the option of gaining a RYA VHF course and First Aid qualification.

At Brockenhurst College we have a dedicated Skills Centre at Marchwood, where you will learn from marine experts using industry standard tools, materials and facilities.

You will work with real watercraft and have access to engines for maintenance and diagnostic tasks.

You can study both modern and traditional boatbuilding techniques, experimenting with high-end composites such as carbon fibre and Kevlar.

Our training is run by a team of selected lecturers and NVQ assessors with professional experience and industry backgrounds.

In addition, we have many marine industry partners who value the quality of our training.

Teaching & learning

This course is approximately a 50/50 split between academic and practical assessment.

A learning day will typically involve a morning of theory followed by an afternoon in the workshop developing practical skills and working with tools, engines and different materials.

Minimum entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 3 and above to include:
•    English Language
•    Maths
•    Science
Applicants should also demonstrate a positive attitude to learning and developing within the marine industry.

Course structure

You will study the following units:

  • HEALTH AND SAFETY – Understand H&S regulations applicable to the marine industry.
  • TOOLS – Use tools and equipment safely in a marine environment.
  • PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT- Contribute to self-development and working relationships.
  • ENGINEERS DRAWING- Interpret drawings, instructions and relevant codes of practice.
  • BOAT TERMINOLOGY – Understand terminology used to recognise boats and equipment.
  • MATERIALS – Explore wood, metal, composites and engineering materials and their properties.
  • MATHS – Understand mathematical processes used in engineering.
  • ENGINE COMPONENTS – Identify engine types and understand engine construction.
  • COOLING – Identify and understand the marine cooling systems.
  • LUBRICATION – Understand the Engine lubrication systems.
  • DIESEL- Understand the compression ignition engine system.
  • PETROL – Identify and understand the marine cooling system.
  • GEARBOX AND PROPULSION SYSTEMS – Know how to service marine propulsion systems.
  • MARINE ELECTRICAL – Understand wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits.
  • BOAT BUILDING – Use wood for model-making and other engineering applications.

What can I do with this qualification?

This programme designed primarily for people wishing to progress onto a Level 3 advanced apprenticeship.

A successful student completing our one-year full-time Marine Technologies course will gain all the skills and knowledge to become a ‘preferred candidate’ for an apprenticeship.

Alternatively, you can follow a more academically-inclined pathway such as a Level 3 BTEC using our links with Southampton Solent University.

At Solent you can apply to study a one-year Technology foundation degree, which will ensure entry o Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Yacht Production or Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Yacht Design degrees.

At Brock we can also offer support for applications to the Navy or Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
