Maths Functional Skills – Adult

Course introduction


Learn practical skills that allow you to work confidently, effectively and independently in life, providing you with the mathematical skills needed to take an active and responsible role in the community, everyday life, the workplace and educational settings.

Information & support


Prior to starting on a course you will be asked to attend an enrolment/assessment session. This will give us an indication of your current level of Maths and subsequently, the qualification you might aim to achieve.

There are various leves of Functional Skills qualifications available, ranging from entry level to level 2.

Classes run from September through to the following June, although it may be possible to join part way through a course. You will be required to attend on a weekly basis.

Students with any kind of disability and/or learning difference may be referred to the Skills Development Team within the college for further support.

In addition, you can access the dedicated College e-learning site which offers additional resources and support.

Minimum entry requirements


These qualifications are for those who have not previously achieved a Grade C or 4 in Maths GCSE.

Course structure


Teaching methods include tutor-led sessions and discussions, plus individual, paired and group tasks.

You will learn to use and apply mathematics in practical tasks, in real-life problems and within mathematics itself, focusing on number, shape, space and measures, and handling data.

Level 1 qualification will include:

  • Representing and analysing situations mathematically
  • Interpreting solutions to problems using mathematics
  • Coverage of mathematical content

What can I do with this qualification?


Maths Functional Skills qualifications will improve your skills in day to day life and can be a requirement for further/higher education or employment.

Completion of Entry levels enables progression onto Functional Skills level 1.

Passing level 1, this will allow progression to GCSE Maths.
