You can expand your knowledge about maintaining health and preventing and treating diseases, as well as learn new practical skills, by selecting this learning opportunity.

Medical Science is designed to further your scientific understanding while following a curriculum with a clear medical emphasis.

You will learn through a variety of teaching methods in specialist laboratories. These methods include theory lectures, demonstrations and practical tasks that will equip you with a range of skills.

The key topic areas will be health, physiology and disease. There are also opportunities to study related areas such as pharmacology, physiological measurement, clinical testing and medical research.

Teaching & learning


You will learn through a variety of teaching methods within specialist laboratories.

These methods include theory lessons, demonstrations, and practical tasks that are conducted both individually and in small groups.

You will also have the opportunity to attend trips to professional laboratories and forensic exhibitions such as the Wellcome collection.

Minimum entry requirements


Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above with a minimum average GCSE score of 4.0, including:
•    Maths
•    English Language
•    Science 5/5 or separate sciences grade 5,5

Course structure

If you choose to study this course alongside other science subjects, you can establish a strong academic background for studying science at university.

With this qualification you can aim for employment in areas of medical science such as the physiological sciences or clinical laboratory services. It can also form a useful foundation for a career in one of the public services such as the Police or Fire Service as well as careers in Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedic Science.
