Are you curious about the world’s physical state? Well, by choosing A-Level Physics you can discover answers to all the big questions.

Things like: Why is the sky blue? How can satellites stay in a geostationary orbit? How is matter created? How much does time slow down for fast moving objects?

For centuries humankind has used physics to advance our understanding of the universe, with every discovery leading to new questions.

Today the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is unlocking some of the greatest remaining mysteries, making it an exciting time in physics.  Furthermore, you can be part of it.

At Brock our Physics teachers have a collective background in everything from Astrophysics to Quantum Physics.

As a student here you will benefit from regular speakers ranging from medical physicists to experts on solar weather. These people bring new insights and help inspire our learners in terms of career paths.

We also arrange fieldtrips both locally and internationally to places including the University of Southampton and CERN in Geneva – home of the world famous Large Hadron Collider.

Teaching & learning

Whenever possible we DO Physics, rather than just talk about it. This means a lot of hands-on experiments, demonstrations and problem solving.

We also use video clips, computer simulation and modelling to show things that we cannot do ourselves.

Arguably the most important thing about our department is that as a student you can always get help and ask questions.  We believe this healthy culture of open access contributes more than anything else to our excellent record of results.

Information & support

You will need to bring a scientific calculator to every lesson.

You will also need to buy the course textbook for each year of the programme.

Fieldtrips are not mandatory and carry an extra cost. However, some local visits and all visiting speakers are free.

Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above with a minimum average GCSE score of 4.0, including:
•    Maths grade 6
•    English Language grade 5
•    Combined Science 6/6 or if separate sciences Physics 6 and a grade 6 in another science

You are strongly advised to take Maths A Level alongside this subject.
 

Course structure

• Investigate different mechanics and materials to gain a solid understanding of key dynamics.

• Explore waves and thermal physics to acquire a deeper understanding of each.

• Investigate electricity in terms of alternating and direct current to better understand the significance of each.

• Gain new knowledge about particle physics, nuclear physics and quantum phenomena.

• Examine the importance of gravitational, electric and magnetic fields.

• Select an option from either astrophysics or ‘turning points in physics’.

What can I do with this qualification?

In terms of careers, A Level Physics can lead to everything from aeronautical engineering to architecture, from medical imaging to inventing new technology or new materials.

Not only that, geologists, meteorologists, music producers, doctors and pilots all need a solid understanding of physics.

Alternatively, you could pursue a career in scientific research.

This qualification is also highly desirable when it comes to university applications, particularly if you wish to study Maths, Science or Engineering.
