Teaching & learning

You will learn through lectures, class discussions, working in groups, individual note taking and by carrying out your own research.

Importantly, you will cover topics ranging from biological explanations for behaviour to how interacting with other people can influence behaviour.

Also, you will use a scientific approach throughout your studies, looking closely at research evidence.  In the second year you will apply this approach to specific topics such as health and crime.

Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 to include:
•    English Language
•    Maths
•    Science

and a grade 5 in one of the above.

If you have studied Psychology before we expect you to have achieved at least a grade 4.

Course structure

• Study various research methods used by psychologists to give you a clear understanding of how findings and conclusions are obtained.

• Explore psychological themes through a series of core studies, both classic and contemporary, to give you a sound theoretical basis.

• Evaluate issues in the area of mental health. For example, how we define mental illness, and how we identify the characteristics of disorders such as schizophrenia.

• Evaluate issues in applied psychology including forensic psychology and child psychology, which will enable you to appreciate how the theory fits into real world scenarios.

• Apply your knowledge to a novel resource such as a newspaper article by explaining the behaviour of the person in the article and applying theory to him or her.

• Prepare yourself to go into clinical, forensic or sports psychology, counselling, marketing, or medicine, by acquiring a better understanding of human behaviour.

What can I do with this qualification?

Thirty-three per cent of our Psychology students progress to a psychology-related degree at university. These degrees can open doors to careers in areas of psychology such as clinical, forensic, child, educational, occupational and sport psychology.

There are also many transferable skills associated with the study of Psychology. For example, whatever career path you choose, you will have a better understanding of human behaviour and how it applies to the workplace.
