You can take your knowledge and skills in sport and exercise science to the next level in preparation for employment, university, or achieving your personal sporting ambitions, thanks to this learning opportunity.

Level 3 BTEC Sport Science covers scientific themes and concepts of sport, giving you greater understanding and new abilities that correspond directly with what employers want to see in new recruits.

Please note that Level 3 BTEC Sport Science is equivalent to one-and-a-half A Levels in terms of UCAS points. You will need to complete TWO other A Levels alongside this course to build a full Study Programme.

This course is designed to help you secure employment in the sport and exercise sector and/or a place at your first choice university.

These comprise a fully equipped gym and fitness studio, 25 acres of playing fields, a floodlit full-size artificial turf pitch for hockey and football, a floodlit 5-a-side artificial turf pitch, floodlit all-weather courts for netball and tennis, and brand new purpose-built changing facilities.

In addition, we run six different sports academies and all our teachers are specialists in their areas.

Teaching & learning


Level 3 BTEC Sport Science is designed to give you a broad understanding of the technical and professional issues related to the sports science sector.

Learning will require in-depth analysis of the anatomical systems of the body and how these function during sport and exercise.

You will also explore the psychology behind elite level performance in sport and exercise, as well as the psychological principles that can encourage behaviour change and help people maintain a healthy lifestyle.

You will learn though a well-balanced range of methods, which combine practical skills with theoretical knowledge. Lessons will take place in classrooms; however, you will also use our full range of sports facilities, both indoor and outdoor.

At Brock we have solid relationships with local employers in the sport and leisure sector. This means you will be able to secure additional work placements to help broaden your experience.

Information & support


This course is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels in UCAS points. However, you will need to complete two other A Levels alongside this course to build a full study programme.

Minimum entry requirements


Four GCSEs at grade 4 and above to include:
•    English Language
•    Maths
•    Science

Course structure


  • Explore core body systems essential to sport performance, including the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
  • Examine theories related to how personality, arousal, aggression, motivation and attribution contribute to sport performance.
  • Develop knowledge of drills and practices, evaluating the effectiveness, suitability and practicality of these practices.
  • Gain first-hand experience in coaching and focus on becoming a reflective practitioner.
  • Evaluate fitness requirements for sport and investigate training methods and fitness programming techniques for enhancing performance.

What can I do with this qualification?


If you are looking for a career in sports science or hoping to progress onto a Sports Science degree at university, then this course can be your foundation stone.

Importantly, it will prepare you in areas that require a scientific background. This includes sports injuries, therapy and massage, sports psychology, physiology and biomechanics, and physical education teaching.

In particular, this learning opportunity is a good fit for people wishing to study for a Physiotherapy degree at university.
