Brock leaver and now BP Shipping cadet Lauren Hounsome took time out recently to speak to Pre-cadetship students at Marchwood about her career journey so far.

The nineteen-year-old from Romsey told learners about her time at sea, explained her qualifying route and answered questions.

Upon successful completion of her degree and her Maritime and Coastguard Agency orals, Lauren will become a fully-fledged Merchant Navy Engineering Officer.

Following her presentation, Lauren said:It was great to see a lovely group be so interested in what I do.

“It reminded me why I started doing this and also reminded me about the really good parts of my chosen career,” she added.

Brock launched the Pre-cadetship in Maritime Technologies course last year for 16-18-year-olds looking to progress into careers with the Merchant Navy.

The new learning opportunity has proved popular, and the College welcomed 22 new students to the programme in September.

Lead Marine Tutor, Matt Rolph, said: “The learners really engaged with Lauren, who spoke for over an hour and gave them a real insight into her cadetship training phases and her experience at sea.

“Lauren has agreed to be one of our Cadet Ambassadors and is a real inspiration to the group.”
