I chose to study at Brockenhurst College because I wanted the independence and freedom that Brock offered. This was one of the main selling points for me, along with the College’s location. I knew that being in charge of my learning schedule would be excellent preparation for my future.

At the start of the application process I wasn’t certain about what I wanted to study. However, after attending open evenings and talking to students and lecturers I chose to study the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business. I have always excelled at coursework, so choosing a vocational course meant I could use my strengths in coursework to prepare me for my next steps.

Throughout my two years at Brock I enjoyed lots of great opportunities. Among other things, I became a Student Ambassador, which meant that I was able to meet new people outside of my studies, share my experiences, and encourage prospective students to attend the College.

One of my highlights during my course was planning ‘Catwalk & Cake’, which was an intergenerational community event. I accepted the role of Event Co-ordinator, and my classmates and I built the venture from scratch. This resulted in a sold-out fashion show and afternoon tea function, which raised over £600 for the HOPe Charity for the elderly and the New Forest Arts organisation.

Another highlight was my work experience placement in my second year. I worked at the RNLI headquarters in Poole alongside the social, innovation, marketing and creative teams. I worked on various projects throughout my placement, including the Respect the Water campaign. Respect the Water was an RNLI campaign aimed at creating awareness about the dangers associated with water and the severe nature of cold water shock. This experience confirmed the higher education path I wanted to follow and the field in which I wanted to specialise.

During my time at Brock there were lots of employability events, apprenticeship evenings and university fairs. Progression Advisors were also on-hand to help. This was great because I could access lots of information about my next steps. Many progression events were open to parents, which meant my mum and dad could attend and support me in my information-gathering.

I achieved a Triple Distinction Star (full marks) in my Extended Diploma in Business. I have now received an Excellence Scholarship and an unconditional offer to study BSc (Hons) Marketing at university.
