Course introduction


You can plan for a successful career in adult nursing or an allied healthcare profession by selecting this industry-focused learning opportunity.

Over two years you will make the links between healthcare theory and practice, developing a wide range of skills and knowledge that will support your next steps.

Your first year will give you general healthcare knowledge and skills. Then, during your second year, you will learn according to the occupational specialism known as Supporting the Adult Nursing Team.

Importantly, you will carry out assessments at college, plus an industry placement (315 hours minimum) that spans the two years.

Course modules/units


The core component covers the fundamental knowledge, concepts and skills required by the healthcare sector. It is assessed through two external exams and an Employer Set Project.

Year 1
• Working within the health and science sector.
• Health, safety and environmental regulations.
• Managing information and data.
• Principles of good scientific and clinical practice.
• Core science concepts (including anatomy, physiology, microbiology, immunology and genetics).
• Providing person-centred care.
• Supporting health and wellbeing.
• Infection prevention and control.
• Safeguarding.

Year 2
• You will study the Supporting the Adult Nursing Team specialism. This will be tested through practical, synoptic and task-based assessments.

Course information


• Study aspects of health related topics, giving you fundamental insights to support your assessments.
• Examine what it means to work in health and social care in order to gain more awareness of professional obligations.
• Explore what it takes to meet requirements for individual care and support.
• Learn about effective ways to promote public health, making you an advocate for healthy lifestyles.
• Investigate core science concepts in health and social care in order to develop heightened skills of emotional intelligence.

Teaching & learning


You will benefit from a wide range of teaching methods, and computer technology will play a leading role in enhancing your academic and practical skills.

Other learning initiatives include class debates, peer reviews and engagement with clinical research. You will also complete practical sessions in the classroom using healthcare equipment.

In addition, you will access a simulated hospital room, where you will develop your understanding of providing care.

Course assessment


This course will be assessed through a combination of external exams, an Employer Set Project, and practical, occupation-specific assignments. It will include a core component (assessed by exams and a project) and the Supporting the Adult Nursing Team occupational specialism (assessed by synoptic assignments).

1. Core Component Assessment (Year 1 and 2)
This tests knowledge and understanding of the healthcare sector. You will complete:
• Written Exams: Two main external exams covering core knowledge (such as anatomy, diseases and health regulations).
• Employer Set Project: A substantial project, set by the awarding body but completed in a classroom setting, requiring you to apply knowledge to a realistic scenario.

2. Occupational Specialism Assessment (Year 2)
This tests practical, hands-on skills associated with the Supporting the Adult Nursing Team occupational specialism. You will complete:
• Synoptic Assignments: These are practical, task-based assessments.
• Methods: These may include practical activity assessments in simulated environments, case study assessments and professional discussion assessments.
 

Grading will be awarded as Distinction, Merit or Pass.

Minimum entry requirements


Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above to include:
• English Language
• Maths
• Science

It is also desirable that you have undertaken a work placement in a healthcare setting.

What can I do with this qualification?


Successful leavers may progress onto an undergraduate healthcare degree, an apprenticeship or employment.

This qualification can lead to a range of health and social care degrees including Adult Nursing, Child Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedic Science, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Counselling and Social Work.
