Course introduction
Still Life is a genre of photography that focuses on capturing stationary objects. These objects can be anything from flowers and fruits to inanimate objects such as tools, toys, or even office equipment. The only limit is your creative ability. Typically, objects will be arranged in a deliberate composition, emphasising their aesthetic qualities, textures, and symbolic meanings. You will look at various subject types and choices of background to complement your subject. Composition techniques will be explored to help guide the viewer’s eye, create balance and emphasise the subject. Common techniques include the rule of thirds, leading lines, framing and negative space. Still life photography lighting involves using various techniques to manipulate light to enhance the subject and create mood. For example, the use of shadows and reflections. Key aspects include using natural or artificial light sources, controlling light direction, softening harsh shadows, and utilising reflectors or blocking light to shape the scene. This is a hands-on course, and you will have the opportunity to set up and capture images. Editing techniques will be discussed and demonstrated, time permitting.
