Course introduction
This course is ideal for students that have inspirations of working in accounting, finance, management accounting, or becoming a chartered accountant. They will learn and develop many of the skills required in the workplace when working in a finance department. They will enjoy analysing financial data, troubleshooting errors and providing suitable solutions to financial problems. They will also develop their workplace IT skills to gain familiarity and confidence with modern accounting software such as Sage.

Course modules/units
Year 1: accounting and finance foundations; organisational forms and stakeholders; financial terminology and the conceptual basis of double entry; interpreting statements and cash flow information; costs, contribution and margin; budgets and variances; spreadsheet and digital-system skills; communication of financial information.
Year 2: ratio and trend analysis; evaluating performance and financial position; investment decisions; risk and uncertainty; ethics, governance and regulatory expectations; ESG and sustainability; data security and emerging technologies; synoptic organisational scenarios and assessment preparation.
Teaching & learning
Teaching is varied, interactive and focused on real-world application. Lessons combine discussion, debate, case studies and problem-solving activities with the use of financial software, spreadsheets and digital learning technologies. Students analyse current financial issues, explore business scenarios and apply accounting concepts to realistic situations. Enrichment opportunities may include guest speakers from the finance sector, employer engagement activities, competitions and visits that bring the subject to life and support progression into higher education and careers.
Course assessment
The qualification is assessed through non-exam assessment (60%) and external examinations (40%). Non-exam assessment may include coursework, projects, investigations and tasks.
Minimum entry requirements
Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language and Maths
What can I do with this qualification?
Learners can progress to further, specific accounting courses such as the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), into the workplace, apprenticeships, or on to university
