The course draws on our strengths in teacher training, child development and the social sciences, including our T Level in Education and Early Years and our Psychology and Philosophy courses. • Explore how children and young people learn and develop at different stages of education.
• Investigate factors that affect learning, including motivation, wellbeing, inclusion and additional needs.
• Examine how teachers, support staff and other professionals create positive learning environments.
• Explore how policy, research and current issues shape teaching and learning in the UK.
• Develop the communication, teamwork and professional skills needed to work with children, young people and families.
• Compare approaches to teaching and learning and consider how they support different learners.

Teaching & learning

You will learn through a mix of classroom activities and practical, real world examples. Discussions, debates, case studies and group projects will help you explore current issues in education and child development. You will also use digital tools, research and practical scenarios to develop your knowledge and professional skills.

Where available, you may hear from guest speakers and take part in activities linked to employers in the sector. Throughout the course, you will develop your critical thinking, problem solving and reflective skills in preparation for further study or a future career.

Course assessment

The qualification is assessed through non-exam assessment (60%) and external examinations (40%). Non-exam assessment may include coursework, projects, investigations and tasks informed by employers. Examinations assess your understanding of key concepts, theories and practices in education. Together, these assessments give you opportunities to demonstrate your research, analysis, communication and critical thinking skills.

Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English language, with grade 4 in GCSE Maths.

What can I do with this qualification?

This qualification could lead to further study or a career in education, childcare or youth support. You might progress to a university course in education, primary teaching, childhood studies, psychology or special educational needs and disability (SEND).

Potential careers include teacher, teaching assistant, learning mentor, educational psychologist, early years practitioner and youth worker. You will also develop transferable skills in communication, leadership and problem solving that are valuable across a range of professions.
