Free Motion Embroidery – follow-on

Course introduction


You will work on embroidering a variety of flowers and grasses on a background. This will give you the knowledge to enable you to let your imagination run wild and create your own wildflower meadows, and add grasses and flowers to other scenes.

Materials and equipment required:

Materials:

  • Cotton batting/wadding: 17″ x 21″.
  • Strips of very pale fabrics (for background): Use calico, linens, cottons, and a bit of lace. Approx 10–12 strips, each 18″ long, varying widths: 1¾”, 2″, 2½”, 3″. It should be enough to cover the width of the batting with seam allowances.

Tools and equipment:

  • Sewing machine.
  • Free motion foot / open toe darning foot (specific to your machine).
  • Machine foot control.
  • Machine cable.
  • Machine manual.

Threads:

  • Black, white and green regular 50wt cotton.
  • Variety of 50wt thread colours to match your flower choices.
  • Pre-filled bobbin with white thread (free motion uses a lot of bobbin thread).

Marking and adhesives:

  • Frixion pen (blue or black, heat erasable – available at Tesco or WHSmith).
  • Glue stick (a Sewline glue pen is preferred but you can use Pritt stick as an alternative).

Fabric for flowers and leaves:

  • Small scraps of cotton fabrics in pinks, purples, blues and greens. Bright and pale colours that will blend well are recommended.
  • A small variety of green scraps for leaves.
