Oil Painting – water and reflections workshop

This course will enable you to use oil paints to paint a landscape that includes water and reflections. You will learn how to mix colours beforehand and mix directly onto the surface to create a more textural and impressionist result. Importantly, you will learn how to make water and reflections look more believable. You will also learn how to layer paints using thicker paint over thinner paints. You will use your choice of brushes or palette knifes, creating a more spontaneous and impressionist approach. You will learn composition and how to choose what to include and what to leave out. Plus, you will learn colour theory and how to create perspective with colour. Your Tutor will provide you with visual references, but please bring your own if there is a landscape you have always wanted to paint.

Course information

Please bring:

• A set of oil paints.
• A box or stretch canvas or canvas board (minimum 10" x 8") but larger if you prefer.
• Mixed sizes of paint brushes and mixed types of palette knifes if preferred.
• A small amount of thinners or white spirit.
• An easel or table easel appropriate to hold the canvas.
• A palette or similar to mix paint on.
• A sheet of A3 drawing paper.
• Charcoal and pencils.
• Protective clothing.
• A reference of a Landscape that includes lakes or rivers with reflections that you wish to paint.
