Course introduction


This course is designed to help you transition from school to college and become more independent.

Among other things, you will learn important life skills and how to adapt to new situations.

At Brock we opened a £4.9m Foundation and Independence Hub in 2023.

The new building includes 14 new classrooms, social space, meeting rooms and a student kitchen.

Course modules/units


You will cover a range of topics, helping you become more independent and more able to adapt to new situations.

Gaining new social and teamwork skills will be high on the learning agenda as well.

You will also continue learning English and maths at the appropriate levels.

Teaching & learning


You will benefit from a wide range of teaching and learning methods, giving you a well-rounded learning experience.

These include classroom activities, community activities, tutorials, group work and individual work.

Minimum entry requirements


You may be accepted onto this course if:

  • You have an EHCP and we can meet your Special Educational Needs.
  • You want to improve your knowledge, confidence, social communication skills and independence skills.
  • You learn best in small groups.
  • You have some learning difficulties.

You will be assessed on your English and maths skills at the start of the course.

You will also attend an informal interview.

Importantly, there will be consultations around whether we can meet your needs appropriately.

What can I do with this qualification?


Once you have successfully completed this programme, you may progress onto the next level of course at our Foundation department.

Progression routes will be carefully selected with you to match your individual strengths, interests and aspirations.
