Course introduction

Do you enjoy learning about dance, developing your dance techniques, performing in shows and choreographing?

If the answer is yes, then don’t miss this opportunity to gain a highly recognised qualification doing something you love.

Dance can be an individual or team discipline, and as a student you will work on both. In fact, collaboration with fellow students is something past students have always reflected on very positively.

Furthermore, you will have opportunities to engage with visiting dance companies, which will run workshops and Q&A sessions.

These include Rambert, Bournemouth University, Lindon Bar, Ballet Boyz, Motionhouse, Rambert at New Victoria Theatre, Woking, Lighthouse, Pavilion and Theatre Royal, Winchester.

Why choose
Dance Level 3 Extended Certificate (Level 3 Single Subject)?

At Brock we are fortunate to have a Performing Arts department with excellent facilities.

You will benefit from two studio theatres, a large performance space, four sound studios, two sprung dance studios, three rehearsal studios, props and costume areas, two Mac suites, and two lighting and sound gantries.

Importantly, your teacher trained in a variety of dance styles and has experience of working in both stage and screen including West End shows.

All of our Dance students have the opportunity to audition for our Dance Company who in the past have performed at Pavilion Dance in Bournemouth.

Each year our students are selected to dance at The Point, Eastleigh for choreographer Joli Vyann.

Teaching & learning

Teaching methods include learning different dance styles in special technique classes. These styles include: jazz, contemporary and contact.

You will study choreography and improvisation, as well as work on your own and in groups.

Importantly, you will have the chance to go on many theatre trips in order to analyse the work of professional and semi-professional dancers.

Course assessment

You will study six units over the two years. Most units will have a written and practical element.

However, this course is very practical, all written evidence is linked to the practical elements. There is no written exam at the end of the course.

The final project each year will be a dance performance and you will also perform in our Annual College Dance Show.

    Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 to include:

    • English Language
    • Maths

In addition, experience in ballet or contemporary dance is desirable.

What can I do with this qualification?

This qualification can help pave the way for a dance course at university or a dedicated school of dance. Former students have progressed to Trinity Laban, The Place, Northern Contemporary and London Studio Centre to name but a few.

It could also lead to auditions and teaching opportunities at various levels. In addition, it will build your confidence and, of course, enhance your abilities as a performer.

Dance has important links with human physiology, so can be useful for students wishing to go on to study subjects like Physiotherapy, Osteopathy and Sports Massage.
