
Chinese (Mandarin) GCSE
Course introduction
Chinese, the most spoken language in the world by nearly one-fifth of the world’s population, has become increasingly important as a language of global business.
By studying Chinese you will become familiar with the fascinating culture and language of this historic and diverse country.
The knowledge and understanding of Chinese language and culture will be of great value in employment or Higher Education. The GCSE Chinese qualification counts towards EBACC points which is recognised by the Russell Group of Universities.
On the GCSE course, you will develop your writing, speaking, reading and listening skills by studying a wide range of topics that will enable you to have successful initial communication when visiting China on either business or pleasure. These topics are involved with varieties of everyday activities such as: shopping for food and clothes, making travel arrangements and employment.
Minimum entry requirements
It would be helpful if you have studied another language up to GCSE and achieved grade C, however we welcome anyone who loves learning languages to join us.
Course structure
You will learn the language by practising new vocabulary and set phrases through reading, listening, speaking and writing tasks.
At this level there is a great emphasis on vocabulary learning, so a commitment to a regular daily review of the work covered in lessons is essential.
You will also learn the language through strong cultural elements, such as celebrate Lunar New Year. Extra support is provided by a native language assistant.
This is a two-year course. You will achieve FCSE qualification towards the end of the first year and at the end of the second year, you will have reached GCSE Level.
What can I do with this qualification?
An understanding of the Chinese language, culture and business methodology is becoming an essential part of many business operations. Many companies operate in the Chinese market including finance, engineering, computing, manufacturing and travel. Many universities are offering the study of Chinese independently or with a combined degree.
