This course is ideal for you if you are motivated by a passion for healthcare, scientific discovery and solving complex biological problems. It is especially suitable for people who enjoy the practical side of science and wish to pursue further studies and/or careers in related fields.

Why choose
Human Biology Level 3 Extended Certificate (Level 3 Single Subject)?

You will benefit from advanced labs, state-of-the-art equipment, and dedicated research spaces. You will also benefit from expert instruction from teachers with career experience in medical and biological sciences. In addition, you will explore real-world applications and follow research development.

Course modules/units

Year one:

  1.  Fundamentals of Biology- human cells and tissues, human physiology, organs and systems, key concepts in endocrinology, neurobiology and reproduction, microbiology
  2. Genetics- fundamentals, mode of inheritance, genetic counselling and genetic testing, gene therapy and genetic engineering
  3. Biomedical Techniques- what biomedical science is, diagnostic techniques, planning a clinical investigation, report writing

Year two:

  1. Health and Disease- causes and effects of diseases, curative management, preventative therapies, immunology, diagnostic techniques, monitoring, reporting, research and confidentiality
  2. Nutrition and the Brain

Additional information

  • Understand the fundamentals of genetics, such as mode of inheritance; genetic counselling and genetic testing; gene therapy; and genetic engineering.
  • Delve into the world of biomedical science by learning about diagnostic techniques; planning a clinical investigation; and writing reports.
  • Develop your knowledge related to the causes and effects of diseases; curative management; preventative therapies; immunology; diagnostic techniques; monitoring; reporting; research; and confidentiality.
  • Select an option that suits your interests and/or career aspirations – options comprise: nutrition; reproduction; the brain; and drug development.

Teaching & learning

Human Biology will be taught using a blend of traditional and modern approaches. These will include discussions and debates to encourage critical thinking, virtual dissections, and 3D models. You will also perform hands-on experiments and benefit from field trips to research labs and medical facilities. In addition, there will be guest speakers, and you will have opportunities to engage with interactive science fairs.

Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above, including:

  • Maths grade 4
  • English Language grade 4
  • Combined Science 4/4
  • If separate sciences, Biology grade 4 and grade 4 in another science

What can I do with this qualification?

With this qualification you can pursue Higher Education, which could mean a degree programme in Nursing, Life Sciences, a sports-related field, or an allied health discipline such as physiotherapy, for example. Ultimately you will be in a strong position to secure a career in fields including biosciences, medicine, paramedicine and midwifery, as well as other healthcare professions. Another route into work is a Degree Apprenticeship – all of which correspond closely with industry needs.
