MiDAS Minibus Driver Training

The MiDAS training programme leads to a nationally recognised certificate of competence in driving a minibus, which lasts for four years. It is suitable for anyone who is required to drive a minibus as part of their role.

This course provides:

• Assessment of your driving against recognised standards.
• A qualification recognised nationally by other MiDAS members.
• Benefits that can transfer to personal motoring.

Hampshire County Council policy stipulates that all those driving or operating minibuses on council business should be trained to MiDAS standards. The training is available to all schools, colleges, voluntary organisations and council departments using minibuses in Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton.

Additional information

All drivers undertaking MiDAS must complete an online theory element. They can work through the course at their own pace and in their own time (approximately 90 minutes). This element can be accessed on any device.

The online theory element will cover the following:

•          Module 1 – Introduction to MiDAS

•          Module 2 – The Minibus

•          Module 3 – Driver Licensing

•          Module 4 – Minibus Driving Tips

•          Module 5 – Reversing and Manoeuvring

•          Module 6 – The Journey

•          Module 7 – Legal Responsibilities

•          Module 8 – Breakdown, Collision and Evacuation Procedures

•          Module 9 – Theory Assessment

•          Module 10 – Next Steps

Once drivers have completed the online theory element, they must attend the practical part of the course. This will include opportunities to ask any questions associated with theoretical knowledge.

The Individual Practical Session will then be undertaken in a minibus, working individually with a Driver Assessor. This will be followed by assessment according to the MiDAS Standard.

Course information

Drivers who passed their driving test before 1997 will have category D1 licence, which means ‘not for hire or reward’. This allows them to drive a minibus over 3.5 tonnes. Drivers who passed their test on or after 1 January 1997 will have a category B licence, which is limited to minibuses of no more than 3.5 tonnes.

Accessible – £180.00

Any course location outside a 20-mile radius of Brock’s main campus will incur a mileage charge of 40p a mile. This will normally be paid by the employer. Late cancellation and re-booking fees for the practical element may also apply.
