Course introduction

This is a non accredited course (accredited format also available) and covers various aspects of soft furnishing and or upholstery. You will work at your own pace on a project of your choice. You may wish to learn how to make cushions, curtains, tie backs or blinds; all of these may be covered in the class. You will complete all techniques required for your project and also have an opportunity to watch fellow students work on their projects. As you progress you will learn about the tools and equipment required and be encouraged to consider design. Or you may choose to work on an item that needs upholstering and various aspects including stripping, webbing, springing and buttoning will be covered. This may be a modern or traditional project and can involve all aspects of this craft.

The class is taught in a friendly atmosphere with guidance being given to students at every stage. The class is predominately practical and the tutor gives verbal instruction backed up with handouts. Assessment is by observation and discussion.

Information & support

This is a mixed ability class and will suit all levels.

What do I need to bring to the course?

Your tutor will advise you on a full tools list over the first couple of week. However for the first lesson it would be useful to bring ½ metre of fabric, pair of scissors, pins, fabric pen and a sewing machine. We will begin with a cushion and progress onto your choice of project. Should you wish to work on an upholstery item please also bring a tack remover and wooden mallet (it is not necessary to strip your item prior  to class as we will cover this in the first class).

Although there will be some tools that you may borrow from the tutor, getting the essentials will ensure you are not having to wait to use tools.

A note pad, pen and a camera would also be useful for recording your progression.

Courses are run continually, and you will be able to join these to further develop your skills.
