Teaching & learning
This general engineering course includes both mechanical and electronic units.
This is an academic course with the majority of work being produced in the form of written assignments. However, we also use some practical elements to help you understand and put theory into practice.
Importantly, you will have the opportunity to pursue a personal ‘design & make’ project in an area of particular interest to you. In addition, you will benefit from fieldtrips, which will help to consolidate the work you have done at college.
Minimum entry requirements
Four GCSEs at grade 4 and above to include:
• English Language
• Maths grade 5
• Physics or Science 4,4
Course structure
- Discover the world of engineering: from mechanical to civil, and electrical/electronic to vehicle or aeronautical.
- Undertake four weeks of work experience to complement your formal studies.
- Study the design process and develop your design skills in a range of different projects, allowing you to bring your ideas to life.
- Learn about materials, processing and manufacturing methods used in industry.
- Learn to use computer aided design applications and use them to model and test your ideas.
- Acquire skills and knowledge in circuit theory by designing and manufacturing your own printed circuit boards.

Whether you plan to study further at university or embark on an apprenticeship programme, this course will give you an excellent basis for a successful career in engineering.
Past students have found apprenticeship opportunities at places including: Ford Dagenham, Lymington Precision Engineers, BAE Systems, Network Rail and Exxon Mobil.
