Pilates – beginners
Dates & LocationsCourse introduction
This activity is suitable for people who require a sound base to develop their knowledge, or those who are returning after a long absence. Pilates works on core strength while improving posture, body tone and alignment, strength and flexibility, and co-ordination and breath control. It is an exercise system that builds through levels and is used by physiotherapists to enhance healing and by elite sports people and dancers to improve performance. This is a mat-based Pilates system, which is taught primarily on the floor. However, it is vital that each class member gets the best from the class. This may mean, for example, that the use of a chair, yoga block, cushion or towel is of added value to a particular exercise. Each class will commence with a short warm-up. You will then build up a repertoire of Pilates exercises and find the level that is most suited to your individual needs. Each class will end with relaxation.
Course information
Clothing should be comfortable and enable ease of movement, while allowing the line of the body to be seen so that safe practice can be maintained. Please wear layers to allow for warmth and coolness as required. Shoes are not worn, so slipper socks are a good addition to your kit, especially in the winter. You will also need a non-slip Pilates or Yoga mat, a yoga block and a resistance band. A cushion and a towel for support where needed will be useful. Please also bring a bottle of water for rehydration. Please seek the advice of your medical physician if you are receiving treatment, have had any recent treatments, or you are in doubt about any condition that could affect your participation.
