Three former students returned to Brockenhurst College recently for its first ever Be Inspired event – designed to give current students important insights into establishing promising careers.

The event featured 30-minute talks from each of the Brock leavers.

These were followed by Q&A sessions that revealed wide-ranging tips for early career success.

The first presentation came from playwright Kit Miles, who studied A Levels in English Literature, English Language, Music and Drama at Brock.

They then completed a degree in English Literature at the University of Oxford, followed by a master’s degree in creative writing at the same institution.

Kit has since written the stage production Bringing the Outside In, which is currently showing at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton.

Reflecting on their time at Brock, Kit said: “I feel my courses gave me the freedom to explore my creativity – the Performing Arts team supported me in writing and staging my first play, which was an invaluable experience.”

Next to present was London based healthcare consultant Joshua Gahan, who studied A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Biology at Brock.

He then completed a Biochemistry degree at the University of Southampton.

Joshua now works to help pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers navigate NHS reimbursement processes.

Joshua said: “One of the most valuable things I took from my time at Brock was my teachers’ encouragement to look beyond just exams.

“They nurtured my curiosity, pushed me to explore my passions, and gave me the confidence to try new things – that mindset has shaped my career ever since.”

The final speaker was freelance graphic designer and illustrator, Dan Murphy.

He told students about his work with major brands such as Animal, Puma, Saltrock, and No Fear.

He also gave his advice on securing jobs in the creative industries and shared details about his creative processes.

Mina Peroni, Head of School Liaison, Transition and Progression at Brock, said: “It was wonderful to welcome back these three former students, who have all achieved fantastic things since leaving.

“I would like to thank Kit, Joshua and Dan for telling their stories, and we look forward to welcoming back more Brock alumni in the future.”

Be Inspired forms part of Brock’s Next Steps programme, which provides students with an extensive range of talks, seminars, trips, and activities to help them make informed decisions about life after college.
