Over 400 hospitality students from across the country show off skills in culinary competition

Hospitality students from across the UK came to Brockenhurst College recently to compete in a nationwide culinary competition.
Organised in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs, the Wessex Salon Culinaire saw more than 400 participants compete in a range of categories.
Contestants travelled from as far away as Exeter and Hull to participate in the two-day event.
The categories included Live Hot, Live Cold, Restaurant, Display and Wessex Bake Off, Barbecue and Street Food, with much of the work performed against the clock in front of a live audience.
Work was judged meticulously with scores given for taste, smell and presentation, as well as efficiency and hygiene standards.
Among the judges were chefs from local and national hotels, restaurants and training centre as well as a trio of RAF chefs and winners of BBC’s ‘Bake Off: Crème de la Crème’ 2017.
Brock’s Hospitality and Catering students walked away with 12 gold, ten silver and eight bronze medals across a variety of culinary and front of house classes.
Chef Director and Head of Hospitality at Brock, John MacArthur said “As a department, we were extremely pleased to host and run, in conjunction with the Craft Guild, one of the largest competitions in the UK and couldn’t do this without the generous donations from a variety of sponsors.
“The Wessex Salon gives our students a fantastic opportunity to not only compete, but also network with visiting judges and professionals from across the hospitality industry,” he added
